Who is Modern Doula International?

Modern Doula trains individuals to provide non-medical, unbiased support to families during labor, birth and the postpartum experience. Modern Doulas are passionate about being advocates for equality, inclusiveness, and belonging. Modern Doulas guide, listen, comfort, and hold space for families during what can be the most cherished phase of a person’s life: the growth of their family.

You have been called to this line of work for a reason. You may already be in the field and are passionate about furthering your training, knowledge, and experience as a Modern Doula. You may be just getting started and are seeking a community of encouraging kindred-spirits to ignite your journey. You may have even been inspired by your own postpartum journey or that of a close friend or family member. Whatever your reason, we are honored to have you join our team!

We look forward to preparing you with a well-rounded program that blends traditional, holistic support with modern medicine and evidence based practices.

Doulaing the Doulas

Our support does not end when your training is over. We offer continued support via optional private mentorship and peer-to-peer connections to keep you excited, engaged and confident.

It takes a courageous, compassionate soul to support new parents during one of the most beautiful and challenging phases of their lives. In many situations, you will be a coach, a consultant and a voice of reason, while other times you will find a greater purpose as a friend.

Our training will prepare you for all possible roles, as well as ways to fill your own cup when your shift is over. As passionate as we are about serving the families we work with, we also know that this work is not for the faint of heart. Self-care is the heart of longevity in this field, and we are here to help you create balance and boundaries for a sustainable career.

We are eager to support you with the tools, resources, and experience working with a wide range of backgrounds.

Compassion is one of the central themes of this training, and is a core value of being a Modern Doula.

How and Why We Started

Julie and Lacey started Modern Doula International as a way to ensure families are supported by the most educated, well-rounded and unbiased doulas. The training program is designed to build a bridge between the holistic community and the medical community drawing on wisdom of natural, homeopathic care with a healthy dose of respect and gratitude for the medical model of care.

Lacey lives outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her husband and three daughters. Inspired into birth work by her first traumatic first birth, she found empowerment and healing with her two subsequent experiences birthing at home with a midwife and doula. Following that healing, Lacey became a birth and postpartum doula and later opened King of Prussia Doulas, LLC. Her vision was to help doulas in the Philadelphia region feel supported, educated and prepared to help families through whatever they might face. Her agency offers consistent education and mentorship to new and seasoned doulas as they learn and grow together.

Realizing that she could have an even greater impact on the current birth culture by working with pre certified doulas, Lacey excitedly launched Modern Doula International with Julie. Lacey believes it is critical that doulas feel prepared to support families whether they lean into the holistic, traditional beliefs surrounding birth and parenting or into the more evidenced based modern medicine approach. Being able to keep one foot in each world, will allow doulas to offer informed, supportive and unbiased support no matter who needs them. Helping birth workers feel truly prepared leaving their training, is the focus of this program. We want you to walk away having a sense that you know what to do and how to do it.

Julie lives in Boca Raton, Florida with her husband and two daughters. After the birth of her second daughter who was born at home, Julie decided to dive into birth work. She became a labor doula followed by a childbirth educator. Julie has always believed through nurturing the whole client from education to spiritual guidance to developing a sense of empowerment, she believed she could help others experience the beauty of birth. She believes in direct and open communication surrounding birthing options.

Julie wants to support others in becoming doulas who are highly educated, prepared to support clients in finding their sense of self and empowerment during their birth experience. She is committed to sharing world views, wisdom from a variety of sources and to helping share the birth world for the betterment of all birthing individuals.
