Birth Support
Our 4 day intensive program will educate you on the history of birth support, the anatomy, physiology of what is happening during pregnancy, labor and the immediate postpartum period. You will learn to uncover the hidden reasons for challenges and know what to do to try to resolve them. You will learn to understand the interventions which are commonly used in delivery and be able to offer the benefits and risks as well as alternatives to the interventions. Know how to help your clients understand when interventions are medically necessary rather than medically convenient so they can go into labor respecting interventions rather than fearing them.

Postpartum Support
Our 2.5 day program will educate you on the history and global perspective on the postpartum period. Learn about the various cultures of families you may support so you can knowledgeably usher families into this exciting new chapter of their lives. Discover the three tiers of well-rounded postpartum support, risks and challenges families face as well as medical complications and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Learn about the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual recovery as well as breastfeeding and newborn care basics. Go into your first postpartum shift feeling fully prepared to support a family in transition because you will know what to expect and what they may need.
What you should know before becoming a doula
For many, doula work is a career that chose them. Some find their way to this work because of their own birth or postpartum experiences; positive or negative. Some are inspired by watching loved ones go through it. Others are drawn to this work because they will not experience this life event in their own family. Whatever the reason, if you found yourself here, you are being called to it from a place of love, compassion and dedication to the perinatal period.
The average life-span of a doula is about five years. We believe this is because doulas have not been properly taught how to be both nurturing and supportive of others while also respecting themselves and their family. We seek to offer that guidance and wisdom so you can make this a career and stick with it for the long term.
We want you to register for your training with your eyes wide-open. Being a doula means being incredibly flexible in your daily plans. You will make all plans with the caveat that you are agreeing, “unless there’s a baby.” You may need to leave events, parties, special days because a family is in labor. You may need to shorten your stay because you now have a postpartum family who is coming home today and wants support tonight. You may have to change your sleep schedule to be able to support a new family which may mean your daily schedule shifts too. The challenges of the day-to-day life of being a doula is beautifully juxtaposed with the ability to come and go from the field easily.
A beautiful part of doula work is you can be fully engaged in the work, you can take breaks from it and even after an extended break, you can dive back in without missing a beat.
